Windows Server 2008 uh... Service Pack 1?
I mentioned before that Windows Server 2008 final release is SP1. Microsoft has published a KB article (MSKB 94960) on it so at least I now have a reference as to why.
Virtual Server 2005 Linux install tips
I found that it's near impossible to install Ubuntu 7.10 under Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1, it keeps coming up with the "can't mount CD-ROM" error during the hardware detecting for install. Even using the kernel option ide=nodma (which worked for installs on ancient computers with old CD-ROM's) doesn't fix it.
I did however come across a good reference for installing Fedora 8 on Virtual PC, I'm seeing how well it translates to Virtual Server.
Must remember the install mantras:
vesa
i8042.noloop
ide=nodma

SharePoint database tuning
This reference came up (thanks to The Sean Blog for the tip) with a new whitepaper on tuning the SQL back-end for MOSS and WSS.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=111531&clcid=0x409
Given our ever-growing use of SharePoint, this could come in handy.

Windows Vista SP1
Windows Vista SP1 was released last week with Server 2008 SP1 (went straight to SP1 for the initial release to keep the same service pack level with Vista).
I decided to run it first on the Toshiba Tablet. Not knowing that to expect, it was pretty straightforward - just remember to check the 'automatically reboot computer' option as the install takes a while and it warns of this (though at least not 4+ hours like the beta did).
The tablet took almost an hour and a half to install, all reboots included. Cameron's computer took a bit over an hour, and the low-end test computer - I didn't even wait, I just let that run over night. The Dell workstation went the fastest, but it has the most memory and fastest processor (P4 3Ghz and 4GB).
I'll be trying my work desktop upgrade next week. 4 for 4 were successful upgrades so far.
Note if you do upgrade to SP1, to match Server 2008 the mstsc /console has been replaced by mstsc /admin
